Ingredients
1 cup butter, softened1-1/2 cups sugar1 large egg2 tablespoons light corn syrup2 tablespoons grated orange zest1 tablespoon cold water3-1/4 cups all-purpose flour2 teaspoons baking soda2 teaspoons ground cinnamon1 teaspoon ground ginger1/2 teaspoon ground clovesOptional: Red Hots, nonpareils and/or sprinkles
Preparation
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Beat in egg, corn syrup, orange zest and cold water. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger and cloves; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Shape each into a disk. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour or until firm enough to roll.
Preheat oven to 375°. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut into desired shapes with a cookie cutter. Place 1 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Decorate as desired. Bake until lightly browned, 6-8 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.
